Daihatsu Hijet Features & Equipment

Hijet mini trucks come equipped with a far more comprehensive set of standard features than a typical UTV. Even when every available optional upgrade is added, most UTVs still fall short of the level of equipment that comes standard on a mini truck—and often at a significantly higher price.

Jump To Section

Let’s take a look at the features and standard equipment you can find on our Hijet mini trucks. Before diving in, it’s important to be clear that not every model includes every single feature listed here. Newer models typically offer more, but if there’s a specific feature you absolutely need, be sure to check the details in the listing and confirm with us before making a purchase. That said, when it comes to the core equipment that everyone expects—like 4WD, AC, and heat—every mini truck available at Mini Truck Depot comes with these features as standard.

Engine And Transmission

Our Daihatsu Hijet mini trucks are sold for off-road use only, but they are nothing like the more clunky UTVs you may be familiar with. Their engines and transmissions operate with such smoothness and quietness that the experience from the cab feels far more refined than what you’d typically expect from an off-road UTV. These Japanese-built UTV alternatives are powered by advanced 3-cylinder, 12-valve gasoline engines with electronic fuel injection, delivering a level of performance and efficiency that stands apart. For those accustomed to work UTVs from brands like Kubota, Can-Am, or Kawasaki, this might seem surprising—but these mini trucks are so quiet they can even be driven near highly strung animals, such as thoroughbred horses, without causing disturbance

This level of refinement doesn’t just make for a quieter, more comfortable ride—it also delivers significantly better fuel efficiency. A Hijet mini truck typically achieves between 35 and 45 miles per gallon, whereas an equivalent work UTV struggles to reach 20 miles per gallon.

With that in mind, the sophistication of the engine is only part of the equation. It’s paired with an equally refined transmission, designed with proper NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) insulation to ensure smooth, quiet, and user-friendly operation. This is a key difference from many UTVs, where drivetrain noise and harsh shifting are common.

Depending on the model and year, your Hijet mini truck will come with one of these four different transmission options:

  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • 5-speed manual transmission with ultra-low range selector and rear locking differential (often known as the “Farming Package”)
  • Regular automatic transmission (shown in the photo above)
  • CVT automatic transmission (usually with rear locking differential)

The difference between the two automatic options comes down to how they manage gear ratios. The regular automatic transmission functions like a conventional automatic, selecting between a set number of predefined fixed gears—typically four forward gears plus reverse in most of these Hijet mini trucks.

The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), on the other hand, operates differently. Instead of shifting through fixed gears, it continuously adjusts the ratio to maintain optimal power and torque delivery at all times. This results in seamless acceleration without the step changes you’d experience in a traditional automatic transmission.

Suspension, wheels and tires

Each suspension setup is specifically tuned for the Hijet mini truck model it comes with, ensuring a stable and safe ride in off-road conditions. This setup provides between 10 and 14 inches of ground clearance, along with a hauling capacity of up to 1,500 lbs. Most mini trucks sold here at Mini Truck Depot will arrive with their original suspension, rims, and tires, but you can also receive a lift kit, off-road rims, and tires to install upon delivery. A detailed set of instructions will be included, allowing an experienced mechanic with a lift to complete the process in just a couple of hours.

Looking at the underside of a typical Hijet (above), you can also see the high level of engineering that goes into these Japanese mini trucks. While they may cost less than comparably equipped UTVs, that’s not because the manufacturer has cut corners on quality or sophistication. Instead, they are built with precision and durability in mind, making them a more refined and capable alternative for off-road work.

4WD System

At their core, Hijet Japanese mini trucks are purpose-built for agricultural and other demanding work applications. Every model sold in the USA comes equipped with 4WD as standard, ensuring they are ready for off-road conditions. However, not all 4×4 systems are the same—some models feature more advanced capabilities than others. For example, models equipped with the Farming Package or the latest CVT transmissions, as mentioned earlier, also include a locking rear differential. This addition enhances the 4WD system, providing even greater traction and making it even harder to get stuck in deep mud or to get stranded in difficult terrain.

Older Hijet mini trucks utilize a push-button 4WD selector designed to improve fuel efficiency. With this system, the driver himself only engages full 4×4 mode manually and when necessary. A quick press of the button allows the truck to switch seamlessly into 2WD mode when conditions permit, conserving fuel and improving mileage by a few extra MPG.

Meanwhile, the latest Hijet models take this a step further with an even more advanced 4WD system. Instead of relying on manual selection, these trucks automatically determine when full 4WD is needed. The system continuously monitors traction and deploys 4WD only when conditions require it, all without driver input. Everything is handled by an intelligent electronic system, ensuring extra traction when necessary while maximizing fuel economy when it’s not. It’s a system that delivers the best of both worlds—enhanced capability without sacrificing efficiency.

Body and cab

Whichever Hijet model you choose, it will come with a strong, fully weatherproof steel cab. Unlike regular work UTVs, which rely on a basic steel tube chassis with bolted-on panels, Hijet mini trucks are built with a fully welded steel shell. This construction method results in a structurally solid, enclosed cab that offers significant advantages over conventional UTV designs.

Beyond the added strength, this design is also far more effective at keeping out the elements—whether it’s wind, rain, snow, or anything else. The rigid structure provides better insulation from outside noise and vibration, reducing fatigue during long workdays. As a result, working off-road in a Hijet is not only more comfortable but also far less tiring than spending hours in a traditional work UTV.

Then there’s the durability factor. The galvanized steel used in the bodies and cabs of these Japanese-built Hijets isn’t just strong—it has undergone specialized treatment to enhance rust resistance. This ensures that it not only retains its appearance over time but also your mini truck continues running reliably through years of hard off-road work.

Of course, that’s just what’s beneath the surface. What you’ll notice right away is that every Hijet is fully painted and available in a range of colors. The specific colors available will depend on the model, but with plenty of options in stock, why not take a look at what’s available there?

Interior and comfort

It’s not just the cab’s construction that sets the Hijet apart from regular UTVs—it’s a completely different level of refinement. From the moment you approach your Daihatsu Hijet, and especially as you climb inside, you’ll notice an array of details that stand out. If you’re upgrading from a traditional UTV, these features will both surprise and impress you, highlighting just how much more advanced and capable the Hijet truly is.

Before even stepping inside, a few things stand out. Some newer Hijet mini trucks come equipped with remote door unlocking—or even keyless entry. No need to fumble with a key in the rain. Just press a button, and the door unlocks instantly.

Once inside, the first thing noticed isn’t just the solid feel of the door as it shuts—it’s the overall sophistication. Unlike typical UTVs with their exposed frames and bolted-on panels, the Hijet has a fully enclosed steel cab, providing insulation from noise, vibration, and the elements. The interior feels instantly familiar, with a proper steering wheel and an instrument display featuring traditional dials and warning lights. This is a vehicle built for real-world usability, and not just bare-bones functionality.

Convenience is also built in. A cup holder sits within easy reach, while the center console houses controls for the AC, stereo, 4WD, differential lock, and more. Airflow is precisely adjustable through multiple vents, directing warmth to the windshield when needed or fresh air throughout the cab when conditions require. Electric windows—standard on many models—operate smoothly at the touch of a switch, eliminating the need for manual cranks.

Seating is designed for adaptability. Even taller drivers find the cab surprisingly spacious, with ample headroom and legroom despite the compact exterior. The seat itself adjusts easily, ensuring drivers of all kinds of different body types can find a comfortable position. Controls are logically positioned, and in CVT-equipped models in particular, operation is effortless—shift into “Drive,” press the accelerator, and go.

Visibility is another key strength. A wide windshield offers a clear forward view, while large side mirrors enhance your situational awareness. Whether backing up to hitch up a trailer or maneuvering in tight spaces, the visibility advantage over a typical UTV is clear.

The refinements even extend beyond the obvious. Hard-wearing, water-resistant seat covers stay looking good even after years of use. Storage compartments, a glove box, and sun visors add everyday practicality. Rugged floor mats provide durability, while interior lighting makes life easier in low-light environments. These are details that make off-road work easier, more efficient, and less fatiguing for the mini truck owner—all refinements that set the Hijet apart from traditional UTVs.

Load Bed

The load beds on Japanese Hijet mini trucks stand apart from those found on typical UTVs, offering significantly more length. This is especially evident in models like the Hijet HD Dump, where the bed measures approximately 78 inches long—providing ample space for hauling larger loads that a standard UTV simply cannot accommodate.

Regular cab Daihatsu Hijets give you an even longer load bed to carry your gear — a whole 80 inches, which is incredible for such a mini-sized vehicle!

But it’s not just the size of the cargo that sets the Hijet’s load bed apart—it’s the weight it can handle as well. For example, the HD Dump models, built with reinforced thick steel-plate beds, boast a maximum load capacity of 1,500 lbs, making them particularly well-suited for heavy hauling and dumping. Tasks like transporting logs or other similar materials—challenging or even impossible for a standard work UTV—are well within the capabilities of these rugged, purpose-built mini trucks.

Finally, here’s a convenience feature you won’t find on any regular UTV but comes standard on these Japanese-built Hijet mini trucks—the three-way opening bed. What does that mean for usability? It eliminates the hassle of lifting cargo over high fixed sides just to load or unload. Instead, simply release the cotter pins and flip down the side you need to access. Whether it’s the left, right, or rear, the flexibility ensures that whatever you need to load or unload is always within easy reach. No more unnecessary lifting or awkward leaning. It’s a system designed to make loading easier—not just on your muscles, but on your back as well.
